Therapy with Chelsea
Therapy with me will involve getting to know you, the concerns that you bring to me, and developing a understanding of you as a human being with a rich, complex and nuanced life story. We will work together to understand how contemporary issues manifest in your life, in your relationships, work and leisure, and how these issues may not be as contemporary as we think. Often our concerns have germinated, grown and repeated over time, and what is required is an understanding of their development to know how to make meaningful changes today.
I work with people on collaborative goals, and I will listen to what you're wanting from therapy. This might mean enhancing your self-reflection, or perhaps finding new ways to cope, strategies to implement and techniques to draw upon. What I won't do is force you to do what I think you "should" do, make your decisions for you, nor take a stance that I am the expert on you. I believe that we all hold within us the answers to our problems, but that for various reasons, this information becomes lost, unformulated and unknown, buried and banished. These answers, or perhaps, our own wisdom, feelings, wishes, needs, urges and impulses can not only become buried, but also conflict with one another, parts of us, and our environment, and lead to psychological pain. What we call symptoms are as such the manifestations of these inner conflicts. With increased understanding of these conflicts, our own patterns of the past and present, deeper change can come about, and enable us to make new choices. This therapeutic style of working with the dynamic unconscious is commonly referred to as 'psychodynamic psychotherapy'. For a deeper dive into what psychodynamic therapy involves, please follow this link to peruse a blog post I have written here.
I will also bring into our awareness the way that you and I may relate to each other. Life's challenges, often taking form in the interpersonal sphere, have a knack for finding their way into the therapeutic relationship and therapy room- which is itself a sort of safe, secure microcosm of interpersonal experiences. This allows us to have a 'here and now' understanding of your concerns, and allows us to process and react in new adaptive ways live, not unlike a "dress rehearsal for life". This type of approach is called 'relational therapy'. This may sound intimidating, understandably, as it brings concerns into the foreground and makes them distinct. It however is a major vehicle of change- as Irvin Yalom has said:
"The act of revealing oneself fully to another and still being accepted may be the major vehicle of therapeutic help."
I offer therapy to a wide range of individuals in a one-on-one setting, from ages 14 and above, across a diverse range of concerns:
